# Run a lesson

> Take attendance and send notes; attendance creates the charges.

After you teach, open the lesson on the calendar and do two things: mark attendance (which handles the billing) and send notes home. A minute per lesson.

## Mark attendance

Open a saved lesson to see the controls, one row per student.

* **Present** marks the lesson taught. When the lesson has a rate, this creates the charge at that rate.
* **Absent** asks one follow-up when the lesson has a rate: **Charge** them anyway (your no-show policy) or **Waive** the charge. Charging a no-show is a per-lesson choice, never a policy you set once.
* If the lesson has no rate, both are simple toggles and no money is involved. A paid lesson with no rate shows **no rate** on the row and charges nothing until you set one; see [Rate presets](/docs/settings/rate-presets).

For a lesson with several students, use the bulk actions to mark everyone at once. Unmarking a student reverses their charge.

That's the whole billing step: the charge lands on the student's account and rides its next invoice. See [Automated billing](/docs/billing/automated-billing).

## Add and send notes

Write in the notes editor, then **Save** to keep the notes to yourself or **Send Notes** to email them out. After they go out, the button reads **Resend Notes** for sending an updated copy.

Each student's notes go in one email to their **Lesson details** contacts: the student, a parent, or both. Set who's in that group on the student's profile; see [Contacts and notifications](/docs/students/contacts-and-notifications).
