# Keyboard shortcuts

> Keyboard shortcuts are keys for the things you do most in Harness.

Press `?` on any page to see every shortcut, or open the list from **Keyboard shortcuts** in your account menu or **View shortcuts** in **Settings → Help & support**. Many buttons also show their key when you hover over them. Single-key shortcuts don't work while you're typing in a field.

## Anywhere in Harness

These keys work on every page, so you can add an [event](/docs/calendar#create-an-event), [charge](/docs/charges#add-an-extra-charge), [expense](/docs/expenses#record-an-expense), or [mileage trip](/docs/mileage#log-a-trip) without leaving what you're doing.

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| `e` | New event |
| `c` | New charge |
| `x` | New expense |
| `Shift`+`M` | Log mileage |
| `?` | Show or hide the shortcut list |

## On the calendar

These keys change the [calendar's view](/docs/calendar#views) and move you through it. Where a key reads `Cmd`/`Ctrl`, use `Cmd` on a Mac and `Ctrl` on Windows.

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| `d` or `1` | Day view |
| `w` or `7` | Week view |
| `m` | Month view |
| `2` to `6` | Show that many days |
| `t` | Jump to today |
| `j` or `→` | Next day, week, or month |
| `k` or `←` | Previous day, week, or month |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`+` | Taller hour rows |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`−` | Shorter hour rows |
| `Esc` | Close a side panel or clear a selection |
| `Esc` while dragging or resizing | Cancel the change |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`-click a bar | Select several bars |
| `Delete` or `Backspace` | Remove the selected bars |

Bars are the [annotation](/docs/annotations#edit-hide-or-delete) and [scheduling link](/docs/scheduling-links) times down the edge of a day. The calendar keeps your hour-row height for the next time you open it in this browser.

## In lessons

Once a lesson is open on the [Lessons page](/docs/lessons#the-lessons-page), these keys step to the next or previous one. They work the same in the lesson sheet on a student's **Lessons** tab.

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| `j` or `↓` | Next lesson |
| `k` or `↑` | Previous lesson |

## In lists

On a list, `/` jumps to the search box so you can start typing a name. It works on [Students](/docs/students), [Contacts](/docs/contacts), [Transactions](/docs/transactions), [Invoices](/docs/invoices), [Accounts](/docs/accounts), and [Reports](/docs/reports), but not on a phone, where the search box is hidden.

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| `/` | Jump to the search box |
| `Esc` in the search box | Clear the search |
| `Esc` again | Leave the search box |

## In dialogs

Most dialogs save from the keyboard, so you can add an entry without reaching for the mouse.

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Enter` | Save or submit, in most dialogs |
| `Enter` | Submit from a text field |
| `Esc` | Close the dialog |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Shift`+`E` | Add a note to a new charge or expense |
| `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Shift`+`U` | Attach a receipt to a new expense |

With **Add more** on, `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Enter` saves and keeps the dialog open, cleared for the next one.

## What your families see

In the [student portal](/docs/student-portal), families can step through their past lessons with `j` and `k` once one is open. They get none of the other shortcuts.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Why did nothing happen when I pressed c?">
    Single-key shortcuts don't work while you're typing in a field. Click outside the field and press the key again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why didn't Cmd+Enter save my repeating lesson?">
    On a repeating event, `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Enter` opens the save menu, so you choose which lessons the change applies to. See [Make it repeat](/docs/calendar#make-it-repeat).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why did an open time disappear from every week when I pressed Delete?">
    A weekly time is the same bar every week, so removing it clears it from all of them. The annotation or scheduling link itself stays, so you can open it and add the time back.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why did m switch to Month instead of logging mileage?">
    On the calendar, `m` is Month view. Log mileage is `Shift`+`M`, on every page.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why doesn't Cmd+ make the page bigger on the calendar?">
    On the calendar, `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`+` and `−` make the hour rows taller or shorter instead. Your browser's zoom works as usual everywhere else.
